These are the most basic form of outdoor chess "tables" basically just chess boards attached.  There are several of these, most of them graffitified, outside OISE (teacher's College) at the corner of Bloor and Spadina.

The tables in Brampton Ontario (on Vivian Lane which leads to the Rose Theatre off Main street). Ten years after the grand opening. They are in immaculate shape but have not very much pedestrian traffic or players.

Street Chess Vocabulary

9/23/2018

I know the readers all have favourite chess terms.  In street chess we have an additional vocabulary, for example, a few that come to mind:
  • black beauties = a pair of bishops for black
  • crazy horse = a knight that is creating monster threats
  • gift (German = poison) = giving a piece or pawn to deflect the opponent or allow combination
  • schwitzenzug = a move that makes you sweat heavily
  • tickler = irritating pawn move
And a favourite saying: double rooks-double trouble

Just to get a general idea of how many outdoor chess tables there are in North America I'm going to start by sharing a link about a listing I found of Toronto chess tables. I only started with Toronto because it's familiar to me and I happen to know this list is not complete.

    Beginnings
I have started this discussion forum with the primary intent of featuring outdoor chess tables across the world (hopefully eventually with chess facilitators). However, other chess topics that appear here on chessfacetoface may also be discussed.

I want to be in touch with people around the world who share an interest of promoting chess at outdoor chess tables. And I also encourage readers who are travelling to take pictures of outdoor chess tables and share them here along with some commentary.
